Watercolor master Nicolás López opens solo exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City
Organized jointly by Spazio Art Space and the Vietnamese branch of the International Watercolor Association, the exhibition "The Language of Water" by artist Nicolás López not only represents a delicate blend of international art and distinctive local materials, but also demonstrates the artist's deep respect for Vietnam's culture and artistic heritage.
Inspired by the beauty of the region's landscape and life, Peruvian artist Nicolás López offers a profound artistic experience that pays homage to the beauty, cultural identity, and people of Vietnam.
The Peruvian artist uses traditional H'Mông paper for the works in the exhibition.
Born in 1984, Nicolás López has been an honorary member of the National Watercolor Society of America since 2019. He has made a significant mark on the art world with works exhibited extensively in Europe and Asia. For his first solo exhibition in Vietnam, he chose H'Mông giang paper as a creative challenge for his artwork.
Giang paper, also known as Pà Cò paper, plays an important role in the lives of the H’Mông people. Beyond its unique characteristics, it holds profound cultural value for the local community. Each sheet of giang paper is not only a handcrafted piece but also embodies the hopes and prayers of those who make it and the mountain communities. By creating on giang paper, an international artist has the opportunity to explore new forms of expression using a familiar local material.
Unlike other types of paper, giang paper possesses a special quality: high absorbency and a rough surface, ideal for watercolor and well-suited to a free and spontaneous painting technique. Made from the giang plant, this paper is not typically used for writing but primarily in spiritual rituals of veneration. The H’Mông people believe that giang paper sheets have the power to attract well-being, good fortune, and bountiful harvests. They are also used to ward off evil spirits and to invoke peace for the community.
With the aim of preserving the traditional values of Vietnamese culture within the field of painting and internationally promoting the beauty of giang paper, Spazio presents the art-loving community with a series of unique works that take advantage of this material's special characteristics. By painting freely on giang paper, the artist creates multi-layered effects in his works, drawing the viewer into the profound stories behind each piece, where water acts as a constant witness.
The exhibition tells stories about the inner world of humankind and local culture, exploring the diversity of the world.
The exhibition "The Language of Water" is not only a profound fusion of international art and local materials, but also an expression of the artist's respect for Vietnam's culture and artistic heritage. Inspired by the landscapes and life of the region, Nicolás promises to deliver a profound artistic experience that celebrates the beauty, cultural identity, and people of Vietnam.
Through this exhibition, Spazio hopes to open the public to a new perspective on creativity within the art of watercolor, as well as offer the artistic community novel and inspiring experiences around giang paper, a traditional material from Vietnam.
